It was build on the territory of the park – Mariinskiy Park in 1752 by order of Russian Queen Katherine The Great. The park which was removed and a beautiful English park, covering the area of 8,9 hectares was founded on its site. The Palace was built in the Baroque style of Bartholomew Rastrelli, the tsarina’s favorite architect.

Once the official residence of the country’s presidents, before the capital moved from Rio to Brasília, in 1960, the Catete Palace displays a significant collection of pieces of art and historical documents.

Here is part of the Republic Museum gardens, in the district of Catete. The "Museu da República" is a historical museum, housed in a former presidential palace (Palácio do Catete). The museum and its gardens are very popular, specially on saturdays and sundays.
